Rachel welcomes £1.1 billion extra for policing to cut crime

A £1.1 billion funding boost for policing to drive down crime and deliver safer streets for all has been welcomed by the MP for Redditch Rachel Maclean.

The 2022/23 funding package represents an inflation-busting 7% cash increase on last year and means policing will receive up to £16.9 billion in total in 2022/23.

West Mercia Police will see its funding increase by £13.2 million in 2022/23 – ensuring everyone in Redditch can benefit from the security that a safe home and street provides

The boost in resources will help support the delivery of the Beating Crime Plan, which set out the Government’s mission to deliver fewer victims, safer neighbourhoods, and a more secure country.

Within the £1.1 billion package, forces will also be given £550 million more from Government grants, including funding for hiring the 20,000 extra officers promised by the end of March 2023. The successful recruitment campaign has already seen 123 additional police officers join up and make a difference in communities across West Mercia.

Rachel said:

“West Mercia has more police officers now compared to when I was first elected, police funding is increasing, and crimes including theft, burglary and knife crime are down.

“But of course I understand we must go further and faster to make communities in Redditch even safer, and this funding increase for our local force will give the police more resources to do just that.

“I will continue to work with our excellent Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion has he recruits hundreds more officers and continues to drive down crime.”
