Rachel Maclean, MP for Redditch County, has said she will do all she can to make sure Redditch benefits from Birmingham hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The UK’s second largest city was officially announced as host of the major multi-sport event today. Organisers behind Birmingham’s successful bid, including West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, have already said they want the games to benefit not just Birmingham, but the entire region.
Thousands of athletes and spectators from Commonwealth nations will descend on the West Midlands for the sporting spectacle and Rachel has expressed her desire to see Redditch benefit from the Games.
She said: “I am absolutely delighted our neighbours in Birmingham have been awarded the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Hosting this global sporting event will not only inspire more people to take up sport, but will boost the economy of the entire West Midlands.
“Redditch has great transport links with Birmingham and so this puts our town in a great position to reap the benefits the Commonwealth Games will bring. By working with the organisers of the games, and the West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, I will do all I can to make sure Redditch is involved in the games as much as possible.”
