Writing in this week’s Redditch Standard (August 5th), Rachel has set out why she’s backing Liz Truss to be the next Prime Minister.

“This week ballots will have been sent out to Conservative Party members to elect a new Leader of our party and Prime Minister. The power is now in their hands. My vote as a party member counts the same as everyone else’s.

“I know many of my constituents will want to know who I will be voting for when my ballot paper arrives. I will be voting for Liz and I will set out why.

“I have worked with Liz over the years and I’ve seen first-hand how she can grasp the detail of challenging issues and find solutions.

“As Foreign Secretary she has led the way on bringing the international community together to respond to and condemn Putin’s barbaric and illegal invasion of Ukraine. She has implemented the toughest sanctions package on Russia in our country’s history. Just recently Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said of Liz: “Her mettle, inner steel, and clarity of purpose have been indispensable in crafting crucial decisions.”

“My Conservative beliefs also more closely align with Liz and her vision for how she will govern our United Kingdom. Lower taxes, small state, more personal responsibility – this is how we will win the next general election.

“Liz is also attracting key endorsements from people like Andy Street the Mayor of the West Midlands. I agree with Andy when he said Liz is committed to levelling up and has a plan to get our economy growing.

“From the very beginning of this leadership contest I have been clear that I will throw my full support behind the new Leader and Prime Minister.

“We still have a lot to do to deliver on our 2019 manifesto. Most importantly I will work with the new Prime Minister to deliver on the promises I made to the people of Redditch, and at the front of the queue is returning a maternity and children’s service to the Alexandra Hospital.”
