Energy Companies

I can assure constituents that the Government is committed to getting the best deal for households. That is why it is paying immediate attention to the retail energy market by giving people greater control over their energy bills and protecting customers from unfairness.

I am aware that energy suppliers have long operated a two-tier market, where those constantly checking for the best deal can do well, but others are punished for inactivity with higher prices. Those hit worst are households with lower incomes, people who rent their home and the elderly. That is why measures are being implemented which will act in their interests.

First, smart meters will be offered to every household and business by the end of 2020, giving people control over their energy bills that they have not had before. In addition, following an investigation into the energy market, a safeguard price control has been introduced for the 4 million households on pre-payment meters who face limited competition from suppliers and whose ability to switch is lessened. Ofgem has the powers necessary to extend these safeguards to a wider group of consumers and is moving urgently to implement such changes. This proposal is a step in the right direction and I welcome that the Government is willing to legislate if necessary.

Alongside this, support will be given which will ensure homes are energy efficient. An energy efficient home is a more affordable and healthy home, and I welcome that the energy efficiency of existing homes will be improved, especially for the least well off. A commitment has been made to upgrade all fuel poor homes to EPC B and C by 2030 and requirements on new homes will also be reviewed.
