Immediately following the announcement at the end of January that the store in the Kingfisher Centre is to close, Rachel met up with company bosses and representatives from the Kingfisher Centre to press the case for a food store presence to be retained at the very least. However today (Tuesday), the store giant has confirmed that their Redditch store will cease trading on Saturday, 7 April 2018.
In a statement, a company representative said they were continuing to discuss the closure with the store’s employees, all of whom have been offered redeployment to nearby M&S stores. He recognised that Rachel would be disappointed by the closure, but the company is convinced it is the right commercial decision for M&S.
Rachel said: “To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I know that M&S has been a feature of Redditch for over 40 years, and I deeply regret the company’s decision to pull out – and particularly that my appeal for them to reconsider retaining a food outlet has fallen on deaf ears. I still believe this is a massive opportunity that has been missed.
“The only bright point is that I was able to seek reassurances on the position of the staff jobs, and it looks as though this has been actioned, and I welcome that.”
